The Power of Positivity as Spring 2021 Approaches
It is almost one year to date since we have experienced a major shift in our nation due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. As we watch the headlines in the news, our fellow United States citizens and some of us are physically returning back to the office, government restrictions for businesses are being lifted, and access to COVID-19 vaccinations are being increased to combat the coronavirus. Even with all of these actions occurring, arguably many of us still have a heightened sense of anxiety. Our best bet is to remain positive and allow our positivity to become infectious in our homes, businesses, organizations, houses of worships, and all other areas of our lives.
You are probably asking yourself, “How can I spread positivity with everything that’s going on around me?” We must begin cultivating a positive mindset in order to create an atmosphere that is conducive for a healthy lifestyle despite what challenges we may experience whether in our homes, workplaces, and all other settings. Scientific evidence suggests that positive thinking enriches physical and mental health, work life, as well as relationships. This is no different than those of us who practice spring cleaning. Just like with cleaning our homes, we have to refuel our mindsets and abolish negative thoughts that may hamper productivity.
Barbara Fredrickson, University of Michigan psychology professor stated, “Joy sparks the urge to play, interest sparks the urge to explore, contentment sparks the urge to savour and integrate, and love sparks a recurring cycle of each of these urges within safe, close relationships.”
As you can imagine, positive thinking can negatively or positively impact your behavior. Professor Frederickson directed a University of Michigan study that focused on how behavior can affect joy, interest, contentment, and love, which are all considered positive emotions.
Robyn Whalen emphatically stated, “Positivity is powerful because it increases your coping abilities and builds resilience. You will have days when promoting positivity and a positive attitude seem next to impossible, but it’s important to remember that you have the power to see the good in any situation. Spreading positively will not only strengthen your mindset, but it will help build the mindset of those around you.”
Let’s make a conscious effort to be positive by doing the following:
Showing gratitude to others
Communicating with others by using positive and encouraging words
Actively expressing our thankfulness on a daily basis
Appreciating incremental progress, not just major accomplishments
Smiling even when it becomes challenging
Focusing on creating healthy relationships and a network of like-minded individuals
Clinging to our morals, values, and purpose
Spring officially starts March 20. Research suggests that it takes approximately 21 days to form a habit. Let’s take these few days before spring to relax our minds, destress and become more positive not only for us, but for those people who need us to model healthy habits and positive behavior.
