Building High Performance Teams

Building a team that is effective, efficient, hardworking, on time and faithful is a difficult task, but if you're a good manager, you can make it happen!  Without a team, a leader can never be called a leader. Team building is the process of turning a group of individual contributing employees into a cohesive team. A team is a group of people organized to work together interdependently and cooperatively to meet the needs of their customers by accomplishing their purpose and goals.

When organizing a team, your first and most important role is be an inspiration to your team, and act like "The" leader. It makes a lot of difference! As long as your focus is dedicated to team building opportunities that lend themselves to the accomplishment of the actual work of the team, you are effectively building a team that will:

•       Have goals

•       Realize what they're capable of and what you expect from them

If the team knows what you're looking for as the manager, they'll definitely work on it.

New leaders often assume that all group members know what the leaders know or what the leaders want. Consistent communication is the most important trait of a successful group. Without communication, none of the other traits can occur. Too often, the group resorts to extended discussion until members become tired and frustrated and eventually just opt for any action at all, or they count on the same person who seems to voice the strongest opinions. Instead, go with strategic planning meetings to keep them going.

The team leader focuses on the systems and practices in the team, not on the personalities of its members. For example, the leader makes sure that all teams: a.) are successfully staffed; b.) understand the purpose of the group and their role in it; c.) are active toward meeting that purpose and role; and d.) utilize procedures for making decisions and solving problems.

Each team has its own unique needs, expectations, and must be managed accordingly.  For example, smart Chief Impact Officers and Information Technology leaders will encourage their teams to prepare now for what could potentially take place in the future. They’ll encourage their teams to look ahead at how disruption will create risk and opportunity. Turning your team’s attention to future challenges will energize and mobilize them to look around corners. Your team could change your company’s business model or enable it to expand into markets you haven’t yet imagined. Inspire your team by challenging its members to help create the future.

Building a high-performing team is not easy but it isn’t rocket science either. Implementing the discussed ways will help turn your team into a more productive one that will deliver results.
